In this generative workshop, we will grapple with what constitutes the political poem and its sub-genre “Poetry of Witness.” We will investigate how to respond to injustice, environmental degradation, sexism, racism and genocide through the poem’s lyric, and not resort to polemical language. Poetry from masters of this genre: Martin Espada, Brian Turner, Carolyn Forche, John Smelcer, and Oregon poets Frances Payne Adler and Carter McKenzie will guide us in the process.
There will be time for writing and to share your drafts, if you so choose. Please be prepared with historical or current political issues you wish to utilize for poem-making.
